What Are Prefabricated Cages?

A prefabricated cage (often referred to as a prefabricated rebar cage) is a preassembled reinforcement structure, typically in cylindrical or rectangular form, made from ribbed reinforcing bars (rebar) and held together by welding, ties, clamps or other fastening techniques.

Instead of cutting and bending individual bars on site, the cage arrives ready to place, requiring minimal additional tying or assembly. In effect, you get a “steel skeleton” ready to insert into formwork and pour concrete over. The design ensures the steel sits correctly inside the concrete cover zones, avoiding exposure or weak points.

Why Use Prefabricated Cages?

There are multiple compelling reasons why construction firms are increasingly turning to prefabricated cages:

Time Savings & On-Site Efficiency

Because the cage arrives already assembled, less labour is needed on site. This accelerates the construction schedule and alleviates delays often associated with manual assembly.

Parallel workflows are also possible, while foundations or formwork are being prepared, cage fabrication can run offsite without interference.

Prefabricated cages can be made to tight tolerances and custom dimensions, including adding features such as stiffeners, pickup devices, hoops or guides. This flexibility means they can suit a wide span of applications, from simple columns to complex piles or bridge piers.

While prefabricated cages come with upfront fabrication cost, the labour, time, waste, and risk savings attained on site often offset that premium. Less rework, fewer delays, and safer working all contribute to tighter cost control.
